  • Samsung India has launched a new shopping app and service, called Samsung Mall, exclusively for the Indian market. The app offers visual searching of products online and provides an interface to shop across different e-commerce sites, like Amazon and Flipkart.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind today inaugurated the ‘Economic Democracy Conclave’ at Thane. This conclave is being organised by Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini. The aim of the conclave was to create a platform for young entrepreneurs and self-employed individuals and provide them motivation, networking and mentoring.
  • Market regulator Sebi has approved appointment of Vijay Kumar as Managing Director and CEO of leading agro-commodity bourse NCDEX (National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Limited). He will replace Samir Shah.

  • The government is going to invite fresh applications for the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Deputy Governor post although interviews were conducted last year.The position remained vacant after SS Mundra retired after his three-year term on July 31, 2017.
  • Idea Cellular and Vodafone India will start operating as a merged entity from April this year. The two companies now require the Department of Telecommunications’ approval to proceed with the merger. The merged entity will create India’s largest telecom operator, having almost 400 million customers with 35% customer share and 41% revenue market share.
  • IDFC Bank’s board has approved a takeover of financial firm Capital First in a share swap deal. Shareholders of Capital First will get 139 shares of IDFC Bank for every 10 held. The merger will form a combined entity with assets under management of ₹88,000 crore, branch network of 194 and customer base of over 5 million.
  • India has been ranked 30th on the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) ‘Structure of Production’ Index.Japan topped the list.
  • IndusInd Bank and Dynamics Inc today announced plans to introduce the first battery-powered, interactive payment cards in the Indian market in 2018. This new card has multiple buttons that let the consumer use a single card to pay in multiple ways.
  • According to a recently released report of the National Family Health Survey, Delhi  is the richest state of India. According to this survey, Bihar is India’s poorest state.The survey also revealed that Jains are the richest religious community.
  • India has granted a financial assistance worth over ₹288 crore ($45.27 million) to develop Sri Lanka’s Kankesanthurai (KKS) Harbour into a commercial port. The move is aimed at strengthening Sri Lanka’s efforts to become a regional maritime hub.

  • The US today officially opened its new embassy in London which is believed to be the world’s most expensive embassy. The embassy worths over ₹6,400 crore and is designed like a crystalline cube.

  • Brazilian legend and 2002 World Cup winner Ronaldinho announced his retirement from football. The 37-year-old, widely known for his creativity, dribbling skills, and the ‘elastico’ move, won the UEFA Champions League and the Ballon d’Or award as a Barcelona player.
  • Assam Hockey won the 8th Hockey India Sub Junior Men National Championship 2018 (B Division) by beating Hockey Rajasthan in the finals at  Hojai Hockey stadium, Assam.
  • Hyderabad Hunters won the 3rd edition of the Premier Badminton League championship by beating Bengaluru Blasters in the final at Gachibowli Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad.

  • Russian scientists have discovered a dinosaur species that roamed Siberia 120 million years ago named the Siberian Titan.
  • American technology company Microsoft has topped Thomson Reuters’ list of Top 100 Global Technology Leaders. US-based Chipmaker Intel and computer networking company Cisco stood at 2nd and 3rd places respectively.
  • China has set up world’s first 3D-printed bus stops in Fengjing (Shanghai).  The bus stops have a closed loop design, accommodating two-round stools inside the structure.
  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) today successfully launched its 100th satellite from Sriharikota spaceport in Andhra Pradesh, along with 30 other satellites.

  • To tackle crimes like cyber threats, child pornography and online stalking, the government is going to set up a Cyber Warrior Police Force (CWPF).
  • 15th January) is 70th Indian Army Day.It was on this day in 1949 when Lt. General (later Field Marshal) KM Cariappa became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army post Independence.
  • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) today announced the introduction of Face authentication feature for Aadhaar users by July 1, 2018. This feature will help all elderly or others facing issues with fingerprint authentication, the UIDAI said.
  • With USD 1.5 billion worth of loans in 2017, India become top borrower from Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). Indonesia stood at second spot with USD 600 million worth loans.
